When Stephen Hawking speaks, speaks, a computer – he can not talk because of an illness. The software communicates via the Hawking, is open source now.
Developed was the Assistive Context-Aware Toolkit (ACAT) from US hardware company Intel specifically for Hawking. The British physicist has been diagnosed with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) and can therefore only move a cheek muscle and his eyes.
A camera takes cheek movements
The software receives images from an infrared camera on his glasses, which receives the movements of the cheeks muscle. In Hawking controls a cursor on a screen through which it chooses from an alphabet letter. The software helps by word suggestions.
For three years, Intel has been working on the software, the beginning of 2014 was the first stable version ready. Since they put ACAT Hawking available, they would have developed further so that it would now also used in other diseases of the motor nervous system, write the Intel developers.
Other entries are possible
So, other input devices can be connected: instead of an infrared camera as a whole normal webcam, a button or a motion sensor. The applications that will drive ACAT, are variable: can communicate unless the user so that for example, use a word processing software or a browser.
“By releasing the source code for these configurable platform to developers, so we hope to continue to bring the system: new interfaces, new forms of sensor inputs, word predictions and other features add” that Intel developers say. The source code of ACAT they provide on the platform Github.
ACAT is programmed in C #. When developing Microsoft Visual Studio 2012 and .NET 4.5 came to use. Therefore ACAT only runs on Windows computers from Windows 7. The system is under an Apache License Version 2.0. (Wp)
