Ericsson buys a video codec company whose founder on MPEG 4 have cooperated. Ericsson is changing from hardware to software companies.

Ericsson wants to buy the company Envivio. The company’s shareholders makes Ericsson a takeover bid of 4.10 US dollars per share. This corresponds to an offer value of approximately 125 million US dollars. With the acquisition of Envivio Ericsson wants to improve its position in the field of video compression.

Envivio is a provider of IP-based video encoding and transcoding. The company is headquartered in San Francisco, California adds claims to more than 400 TV provider. Among the company’s customers include Comcast, Cox Communications, Liberty Global, Sky, Telstra and Time Warner Cable. Envivio generated in 2014 a turnover of 43 million US dollars and has approximately 200 employees.

Envivio was founded in 2000 as a spin-off of France Telecom R & D Labs founded in San Francisco and Rennes. The founders made contributions to the specification and development of MPEG-4. The company holds 17 patents in the area from the period before 2000. Envivio went in April 2012 to the stock exchange.

Ericsson employs around 115,000 people. Headquartered in Stockholm was established in 1876. Ericsson changed from a hardware manufacturer to a provider of software. In 2004, the Swedish Group generated 73 percent of its revenues from hardware, 27 percent of software and services. In 2014 the proportions had almost totally reversed.
