Ericsson Research provides a clear framework to support WebRTC ready. This uses H.264 or VP8, based on GStreamer and also supports Android and iOS. For the latter also a free sample browser is available.

Open WebRTC is published by Ericsson Research as free software framework that can be written for the communication protocol with the client applications. The software can be used on the one hand as a backend for a browser. On the other hand, should therefore also native applications can be deployed for mobile operating systems.

In order to demonstrate the capabilities of the libraries, the company released the sample application Bowser also under a free license. Bowser is actually not much more than a UI layer, which is based on Open WebRTC and is available for both iPhones and iPads for download in Apple’s App Store. Unlike conventional mobile browsers, Bowser allows the manipulation of the video element by the use of the CSS and JavaScript, which enables various controls and views.

In addition to a variety of mostly small external libraries used Open WebRTC mainly the Gstreamer framework for processing and presentation of multimedia data. For video transmission can both VP8 and H.264 are used. For the latter, which is actually managed, attacks the development team back on the code of Cisco’s OpenH264, which was originally made for use in Mozilla Firefox freely available.

Although the library is described as being compatible with the implementations in Firefox and Chrome, the team acknowledges but not yet support all features of the standard, such as the Data Channel. Should be added also support for H.265, aka HEVC, and the placing of the code in a framework for OS X and iOS.

Open WebRTC there except for iOS and Android Linux distributions and Mac OS X. Porting to Windows is in planning. The code is available under a BSD license on Github to download. (Sg)
