EU directive on radio foreclosure has a negative impact on free software – Netzpolitik.org

23 organizations, including the Free Software Foundation Europe, the CCC and free radio, oppose the directive on radio foreclosure, which should be valid in the EU from 13 June 2016th

In a joint statement said:

The Directive on radio foreclosure [..] threatening software freedom, consumer rights, fair competition, innovation, the environment and volunteer initiatives – without comparable safety benefits. It leads disproportionate “essential requirements” a, by forcing device manufacturers to demonstrate compliance with radio regulations for any software that is theoretically capable of running on any product that uses the radio spectrum. In the end, may in future only special software that has been authorized by the manufacturers, on any device be installed that builds connections over wireless and mobile networks or GPS. This includes, for example, routers, mobile phones, wireless cards, and laptops, in which they are installed, and almost all devices that have a network functionality.

The undersigned organizations demand that the EU still stipulates exceptions for free software in the Directive. The transposing those EU countries, however, should the Directive into their legislation so interpret that free software can continue to be installed in the devices and the users are not compelled to use non-free software.

For organizations NGOs, initiatives and individuals have the possibility to join the opinion.
