CEO of Tableau Software – Computer Week

The greater the amount of data that produce human and machine every day, the more we seem to be lost in it. Evaluation and Visualierungs tools that are easy to use, according to are booming. As for the practicality of the programs, there are good and bad examples – also with regard to the results …

A company that has been very successful among others at major German corporations for some time, is Tableau Software. With interfaces to almost 40 popular database systems, it is quite safe quick to use for all users. We have let our product and the principle behind it explain a closer Tableau CEO Christian Chabot

COMPUTER WEEK:. What exactly is Tableau Software

? CHRISTIAN CHABOT: I used to be a number cruncher and myself have experienced that databases and spreadsheets are too difficult to use for humans. With our software, we are doing something about it. That’s about it. We, I mean the three founders Pat Hanrahan, Chris Stolte and I came, not from the industry and the problem from the outside have recognized. Just as Google once came along with a completely new algorithm to better track information on the Internet, we are using a new approach to data at the start. Sometimes we therefore been described as “the Google Data”. If a person has a question, there is almost always a data or information collection that is the answer. To obtain this, but it takes mostly specialists. With our software eliminates the need to, because the questioner, the data simply can evaluate themselves. This simplicity makes us so successful.

What our software can exactly is referred to by some as data visualization, data analytics or by others as well as self-service database. Whatever. It’s about making to data for the user easy to access and evaluate them easily depending on the problem

CW: How does the technology behind your software

CHABOT? The Tableau Software uses local data sources such as Excel spreadsheets, Access databases or plain text files. In addition, we support more than 30 of the major database systems, MySQL and SAP Hana over Oracle and Salesforce to IBM DB2 and Splunk. We use the respective interfaces and also often work with the software developers of providers together so that we can offer our customers a complete range of popular formats. The connection to the data found on a login screen on the local client or optional centrally by IT administration within the company instead.

OpenStreetMap instead of Google

As for the map display, we use data from OpenStreetMap, which we then extend our data to store on our own server for analysis. We focus on Open Street Map, because as Google Maps, which use many other suppliers, our needs are too many unnecessary additional information.

The data export is possible as a static representation as PDF, PowerPoint and image file, but mainly it is also possible to export interactive graphics for the web. The user decides how many and he wants provided with interactive capabilities which parts of a presentation

CW:. What does your license model

CHABOT: users can use Tableau either as a cloud service “Tableau Online” in the subscription model or as an on-premise solution “Tableau Server” a classic licensing. In addition, there is a Home version “Tableau Desktop” and a stripped-down free version “Tableau Public” for non-commercial use. The on-premise version is the most popular because users reluctant to enter their data into the wrong hands. The cloud version is always better to – especially in the US. But we also have German customers who already rely on it.

CW: How do you market your solution? Talk targeted at specific industries? Certain levels of the hierarchy? Certain occupational groups

CHABOT: We speak to anyone who’s good with art. Whether school teaching, nursing, political activism, climate change, supply chain optimization, risk management, marketing. Anyone who is an expert in a particular field, but it is not a trained analyst

Data for anyone

CW:. How is nevertheless a certain technical and statistical understanding needed to as to your work with a solution

CHABOT: Anyone who deals with data that needs some understanding of this type of information and the associated variants in the preparation. We offer the opportunity to acquire this knowledge quickly. There’re usually not more than five to ten different factors which looks a user. More can handle anyway no one. Take the example of a teacher. He wants to know the marks of his students, the size of the classes, the gender distribution, might not have details at the time of a particular audit – that was about it. These dimensions are for a database which can be pulled out easily, and visualize.

Or a nurse: At the bedside, a medical record is linked to all sorts of information about the patient – for me there are hieroglyphics on it, but the nurse know right away who there is, what it lacks when he gets something to eat, what medications he gets and who has recently cared for him. What they do not know is how they prepared this data in an intelligible way and is, if it should be necessary. We jump at the point a

CW:. What are your plans for growth of

CHABOT: I started with Tableau 2003 my bedroom. The first version of the software in 2005 was on the market. End of the year we had 200 customers already, three years later in late 2008 2,000 companies took advantage of the software. This summer has in turn increased tenfold – 20,000 customers. Meanwhile, we are at 23,000. Last year we went to New York under the symbol DATA public.

Our overriding goal is to help ensure that people of all levels of education can enter data in the subject. I see this simply as a universal necessity in today’s time. We want everyone can use the amount of information and data useful, it needs. ‘Morning news’ order
