The Trinity Desktop integrates current Linux technology such as udev or Network Manager. In addition, the KDE3 Fork now uses some more new developments such as a compositor, even the Qt3 Fork has been improved.
For six years, a small team of initiator Timothy Pearson with the Trinity Desktop Environment (TDE) maintains a fork of KDE3. With the now released version including R14.0, the team also finished the versioning scheme previously used the 3.5.x series, which was acquired and maintained by KDE. This is to emphasize the independence of the project and to prevent confusion.
In the two years of development since the last publication of TDE about a new hardware support based on udev has been implemented, which is now used instead of HAL. The latter is for compatibility reasons ready to continue. In addition, versions 0.9 and later of the Network Manager are supported. The hotel’s own fork of Qt3 has also got a new theme engine and allow execution of multi-threaded applications. The speed as well as the stability should have also improved.
As a compositor instead of the old Kompmgr from KDE3 a version of Compton is now used with some specific extensions for TDE. To avoid name conflicts with other desktops, but above all the software of the KDE project, the TDE team has renamed a very large part of the applications, libraries and packages. Thus, TDE can now also in parallel with other Unix desktops install.
Other innovations, especially small details list the official release notes. Packages for Debian and Ubuntu are available for download, additional Linux distributions will follow. The image of a live CD is also available. (Sg)
