3Digify: 2 cameras + projector + = 3D scanner software – Golem.de

a 3D scanner for Selbstbauen provide two scientists from Kaiserslautern before: They have developed a software that controls two cameras and a projector to create 3D scans

Two commercial cameras, a video projector – more hardware does not need to build a 3D scanner.. It then only missing one thing: A software to record the data. She’s 3Digify and was designed by John Kohler and Tobias Nöll of the Technical University (TU) developed in Kaiserslautern. They put them at the booth of Rhineland-Palatinate (Hall 9, Stand D23).

The structure consists of two cameras – there are two digital SLR (DSLR) – which are placed at a certain distance from each other and connected to a computer. When an object is scanned, the projector projects a series of stripes pattern on the object. The cameras capture the image and the software to calculate deformation of the strip, the geometry of the object.

user rotates the object

If the scan is completed from a perspective of the software, a message appears on the screen. The user rotates the object so that it can be scanned from a different perspective. Normally ranged from six to eight scans as well as one for the top and bottom of Köhler told in an interview with Golem.de. The software installed in the several views, then a 3D model.

“The benefit to the user is that he can assemble the scanner itself and thereby the quality and price of the scanner itself determines” , says Köhler. Because the resolution of the scan is determined by the cameras. Say: The higher the resolution of the image sensor, the finer the 3D scan.

Better camera takes better 3D scan

Kohler shows three examples: the same image section of a Chinese Lion Statue ,, which was taken with different cameras. The webcam can hardly capture finer details. The results of the high-order DSLRs, however, were already in professional scanners that are too expensive for private customers in the normal case.

The cameras should be identical. This is due to the processing of the image information onto the sensor, which is different from manufacturer to manufacturer and partly from model to model. If different cameras are used, the system must be manually calibrated.

cameras are moved away from a larger object

Another advantage over a conventional 3D scanner: This unit can only scan objects up to a certain size. Should 3Digify with a larger object to be scanned, the cameras simply be positioned further away from the subject. Or it can be used a lens having a smaller focal length. The software can recognize distortion and compensate for this, the developers say.

A 3D file is 10 to 20 MB in size. These can be uploaded from the software to the 3D portal Sketchfab – a corresponding connection is available in the software. The interactive 3D model can then be embedded into a website. The 3D model can also be processed with a software or output to a 3D printer, which then builds the scanned object.

Kohler and Nöll want to provide mid-2015, the software is expected. About a business model, still thinking. One possibility, private users offer the software for free with some basic functions. For more functions they would have to pay a small amount. (Wp)
