recognition, without identifying: The Japanese technology company Fujitsu has a technique developed to evaluate the movement of people. It enables to identify people without violating their privacy.

Where are they going? Fujitsu Laboratories has developed a technique with which it is possible to track the movements of persons and evaluate. The technique identifies the people not to her face. This means they can be used in low-resolution video.

Set in the images of surveillance cameras a person be prosecuted, the images are first searched for body shapes. If a body made out, the person is identified on her face. The data can be transferred from camera to camera to track the way this person – even if the identity of the individual is not important.

The head counts

The technology developed by Fujitsu also identifies individuals based on their shapes. An important distinguishing feature is the head: Regardless of which side and at what angle a person is detected, it is recognizable as round or elliptical shape at the upper end of the body. This recognition would also work in low-resolution images and if several people stood close together, says Fujitsu.

If the system detects a human, it looks at the color of his clothes. Which is the distinguishing feature to keep track of the person with multiple cameras. A color’ll be extracted good at low resolution. However, but just small patches of color mix at low resolution with the environment. The system therefore focuses on distinct colors. These were sufficient to identify a person.

Detecting low resolution

Fujitsu evaluates the method as an advantage for Data Protection: The technology made it possible to detect the movement of people and analyze without these are identified here. It would need to be installed any high resolution cameras, but the shots in low resolution sufficient. This contributes to the conservation of privacy.

The evaluation of transaction data is for example important for the planning of public transport systems, and preparing for major events. As a result, traffic jams can be avoided or create escape routes.

Where is the staff

But business people use such data: shopkeeper about the movements in a street can be evaluated to find out where they at themselves best settle. Evaluated them from the ways in business, they could find out where they set up their wares to generate the most attention or where the staff is up.

Fujitsu introduces the technology at the conference of the section Computer Vision and Image Media of the Information Processing Society of Japan. The conference will be held at the Tohoku University in Sendai in northeastern Honshu skin brush on 6 and 7 March 2015. (Wp)
