Black Duck Software and Northbridge have the results of the ninth edition of its annual survey “Future of Open Source Survey” presented. According to put 78 percent of all companies in some form of open source software. And managing the software there are still massive Defizite.

use 78 percent of all companies OSS (Photo: Black Duck Software) Black Duck CEO Lou Shipley commented:” In the results this year become clear that their company management and control of open source only need to bring even on a level with its use. This is critical for any legal exclude operational and safety risks without having to sacrifice the full benefits of OSS. “

Shipley refers to the fact that over 55 percent of the C-level managers and other IT executives conceded in their company there is no formal guidelines for open source applications. Only 27 percent have rules on contributions of their employees to OSS projects. Just 16 percent can demonstrate automated code-approval procedures, less than 42 percent shall keep a register used open source components.

It is therefore not surprising that more than 50 percent feel that becoming known vulnerabilities in Open source components not being able to understand enough. Only 17 percent have the right to examine open source code for security vulnerabilities.

This compares to a new level of acceptance of open source. Not only use 78 percent of OSS, 66 percent use for customer applications developed on open source on. 2010 had only 42 percent of all companies open source in some form in use. Also say 66 per cent, with the introduction of new software they saw first order for open source solutions.

93 per cent stated that the use of open source code is unchanged or higher over the previous year. 64 percent are involved in open source projects – spring 2014 the figure was only 50 percent. In the next two to three years, 88 percent expect to increase their contributions to open source projects.

The reason for the use of OSS call 55 percent better security than proprietary solutions. 61 percent believe that the security of OSS compared to proprietary software will increase over the next two or three years.

58 percent consider OSS for easier scalability, 43 percent report providing simpler than with proprietary solutions. In the next two to three years, OSS is likely, in the opinion of IT managers on cloud computing (39 percent), Big Data (35 percent), operating systems (33 percent) and the Internet of Things (31 percent) impact.

Black Duck Software offers itself to open source software, precisely for the disputed area as deficient open source management. Northbridge is a venture capitalist.

naive confidence in the security of open source solutions such as OpenSSL led last year to massive threats such Heartbleed. While OSS over proprietary software is considered as a safe, because everyone can inspect the source code, it is obviously too rarely practiced. In addition, also solved problems of OSS components often only with considerable delay in solutions again using these components.
