“Watchdog” software detects dangerous Hapag-Lloyd – Lübeck News

Hamburg . Almost a small container ship full of dangerous containers: Over 2,600 falsely labeled container has Hapag-Lloyd discovered last year in which dangerous goods was loaded. This was especially so-called “watchdog” – so “watchdog” software responsible, informed the shipping company. It scans the charge data and raises an alarm when they discovered abnormalities – for example, certain chemical formulas.

Missing or wrong undeclared dangerous goods poses a major risk to crews, ships and the environment. “This includes simple everyday goods that do not seem like dangerous at first sight,” said shipping company spokesman Rainer Horn. Readily combustible ping-pong balls, perfume and spray cream counted about it. The mislabelled containers could “explode or catch fire,” Horn said – a disaster at sea or even at the time of loading in port.

“Watchdog” software has been developed since 2011. Other shipping companies showed, according to Hapag-Lloyd has interest in it.
