Electric mobility and power grids: New software shows network operators possible … – Solar Server

For the success of electric mobility not only economical vehicles, but also efficient power grids are required. Current lines are not designed for the loads coming, says the Fraunhofer Institute of Optronics, System Technologies and Image Exploitation IOSB in a press release.

Institute researchers have now developed a prototype software that network operators continue to show how many electric cars can be connected to your local network.

An electric vehicle uses up to 22 kilowatts

The increasing number of electric vehicles brings operators in distress: the low-voltage networks of households are not designed for loads generated when electric cars are charged with electricity at home. “A car uses up to 22 kilowatts. If more than one car load at the same time, achieve current networks quickly their limits, “says Dr. Michael Agsten part of the Institute of Applied Systems Technology AST (Ilmenau).

The scientist and his team developed a software that displays network operators, how much load can withstand load their low-voltage grid. This allows conclusions to be drawn as many as electric vehicles can be connected without being hurt that limit. This would allow network operators plan ahead, the researchers point out.

The prototype was developed in the framework of the project “Controlled Charging 3.0″, which is funded by the Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation, and Nuclear Safety Construction (BMUB). “The IT platform works with test data in the laboratory already very good. In the next step we want to analyze real distribution networks, “said Agsten.

distribution network operators can protect their networks from long-term damage and acute failures

The software emulates how many loads are possible without the prescribed normative or operational limits are violated. Typically, 150 and more households are supplied by a local substation. Assuming that a portion of households will continue to own an electric vehicle and load it at any time, be a lot of loading scenarios are possible, according to the scientists.

You simulated their model, therefore, with the Monte Carlo method, a stochastic method. Within a few seconds, the software indicates how high is the risk of overloading and how much electric vehicles can be loaded simultaneously in a local area network. With the limits for the electrical distribution system operators can protect their networks from long-term damage and acute failures.

“With a steady growth in the future, it is important for network operators, early to know how much room is still available. Otherwise, they will only find out if their clients report directly to problems, “says Agsten.

e-Mobile could offset fluctuations in renewable energy

The platform of the IOSB is where the low voltage network, the lowest level of the electric transmission and distribution system. It combines the power outlets of households over multiple network levels with high and very high voltage networks, in which to expect a further increase in share of fluctuating renewable energy sources. E-Mobile could compensate for these variations, because they can also be used to store energy. “But only if the grid allows their connection,” says Agsten.
