Even computers with Apple’s Mac OS X are not safe from hacker attacks. A good virus protection is therefore also for Mac users duty. A test shows you the best programs – including free solutions.

Apple’s operating system Mac OS X was not yet the reputation of being particularly vulnerable to hacker attacks and malware attacks. This is likely to provide only limited distribution than on the security of the system – when compared to Microsoft’s Windows operating system market share of Mac OS are still low. But they are growing steadily and with each sold Apple computers is the platform interesting for hackers. While Apple has its own watchdog that keep many threats, but the additional installation of an antivirus program can not hurt.

What programs are recommended and if there are some antivirus solutions that do not really deserve its name, has the Independent Institute AV-Test tested. In the test lab were 13 security products for Mac OS X on the plan – free suites or purchase programs with many extras. All 13 have been tested for safety and system load, but only 10 were able to meet the requirements, 3 fell smoothly.

software is better

Compared to the last test by April 2015 now have more Products a good recognition rate, as AV-Test. One hundred percent protection against malware get Mac OS X users with the software from Avast, Avira, BitDefender, ESET, Kaspersky, SentinelTwo, Sophos and Symantec. These programs recognized and liquidated all new, unknown pests. SentinelTwo is the only one that completely dispensed with a signature database and uses for analyzing only the technique of behavior-based detection.

Panda (95.2 percent) and Intego (92.9 percent) follow on the ranks nine and ten. The three last placed condition of AV-Test certificate no – ClamXav (88.1 percent), Webroot (78.6 percent), and F-Secure (76.2 percent) fall through. ClamXav, one of the fallen through services, was also the only service of false alarms triggered and a really clean file reported incorrectly. Everyone else had a faultless identification friend or foe. In the detection of potentially malicious software (“potentially unwanted application”, short PUA) praises AV-Test’s services Avira, Bitdefender, ESET, Intego, Symantec and SentinelTwo.

The protective effect of anti-virus suite is one side. But good anti-virus protection should be not only safe, but also slow down the system as little as possible. To test this, 26.6 GB of data on a reference system copies, calculated MD5 hashes for files and download a set of files. The best score ClamXav here. Panda, Bitdefender and Symantec fared well. They slowed a system by approximately ten percent of the reference value of 146 seconds. Sophos slows by 20 percent, Avira by 40 percent. SentinelTwo brings it to 80 percent and F-Secure did on 120 percent of the reference value. Taillight is Avast, as it scans the file already in parallel with a download – that is secure, but also takes a long time

Among the best solutions in the test were also free virus protector.. The best overall offer payment programs BitDefender Antivirus for Mac and Symantec Norton Security. The best free software is Sophos Anti-Virus. Avira and Avast are also free and have a good recognition, but the system slow down to 40 or 170 per cent – that is not acceptable for the AV Tester
